Toileting Support Workshop Series for Parents and Educators

OVERVIEW

KidsAbility is excited to offer a specialized lunchtime Zoom course this summer, designed for parents, caregivers, and professionals who support children with toileting concerns. Occupational therapists will lead this course, addressing a range of issues such as sensory challenges, motor skills, coordination, and environmental modifications. Through this course, we aim to provide personalized interventions and practical strategies that will help your child achieve toileting independence and build confidence in managing their toileting needs.
COURSE CONTENT
Course Format: Online

Duration: 3 virtual Zoom meetings

Focus: Tailored support for your child and student’s toileting needs

Content: Tackling common challenges, expert tips, and strategies for encouraging independence

 

For Parents of Primary School Aged Children (6+):

 

  • Topics Covered: Addressing issues like bedwetting and other unique toileting challenges
  • Approach: Providing compassionate and effective strategies tailored to your child’s specific needs
  • Support: Empowering you to handle sensitive issues with confidence and understanding, fostering a positive environment for your child’s growth

 

For Parents & Educators of Preschool Aged Children (Under 6):

 

  • Topics Covered: Focused on readiness for toileting, transitioning from nappies, and managing constipation
  • Approach: Offering tailored strategies to meet your child’s unique developmental needs
  • Support: Guiding you through the challenges of early toileting with empathy and practical advice
COURSE SCHEDULE

Day 1: Understanding Toileting Difficulties

  • Sensory Needs: Exploring how sensory processing impacts toileting. Some children may find certain aspects, such as the texture of toilet paper or the sensation of sitting on the toilet, uncomfortable or overwhelming. Understanding your child’s sensory processing can help in managing these challenges.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Discussing how difficulties with fine motor skills can impact tasks like undressing, managing clothing fastenings, and wiping effectively.
  • Gross Motor Skills: Addressing challenges with balance, coordination, or mobility that affect the ability to get on and off the toilet safely.
  • Toileting Routines: Establishing and following consistent routines, crucial for individuals with developmental disabilities or cognitive impairments.

 

Day 2: Addressing Specific Challenges

  • Topics Covered: Strategies for managing constipation and bedwetting, and other specific toileting challenges.
  • Approach: Practical interventions and advice to address these issues, with tips on how to implement these strategies effectively at home.

 

Day 3: Interactive Session

  • Format: Optional interactive session
  • Activities: Q&A session to ask specific questions, discuss any strategies you have tried, and receive additional resources and support from our occupational therapists.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

If, following the course, you feel that more individualized support would be helpful, you can book a toileting consultation at KidsAbility. Our occupational therapists will provide one-on-one guidance tailored to your child’s specific needs.

FEES

  • $325KYD per parent /educator
  • 10% discount for schools that register more than 1 educator for the course
